"Since its founding by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the Society of Jesus ("The Jesuits") has been intimately involved in the unfolding of the modern world. The young Jesuit order played a crucial role in the Counter Reformation, especially in Poland, southern Germany, and several other parts of Europe. The Jesuits were also participants in the establishment and spread of European empires, engaging in missionary activity in east and south Asia in the 16th and 17th centuries, and becoming central to the spreading of Christianity in the New World. At the same time, Jesuits often tangled with the Roman curia and the Pope, leading to the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. After the subsequent restoration of the order in 1814, the Jesuits continued to be leaders in Catholic education and theology. In 2013 Jorge Bergoglio became the first Jesuit Pope, taking the name Pope Francis I. In this book, Markus Friedrich presents the first comprehensive account of the Jesuits from a non-Catholic perspective. Drawing on his expertise as a historian of the early modern world, Friedrich situates the Jesuit order within the wider perspective of European history. In particular, he places the Jesuits in the context of social, cultural, and imperial history, showing that the Jesuits were not monolithic but rather were very sensitive to local context and that the order's core texts, especially Ignatius's Spiritual Exercises, were templates to engage with, rather than instructions manuals to be followed slavishly"--

"In 1540, in the wake of the tumult brought on by the Protestant Reformation, Saint Ignatius of Loyola founded The Society of Jesus aka The Jesuits. The Society's goal was to revitalize the faith of Catholics and to evangelize to non-Catholics through works of charity, education, and missionary work. By the end of the century, Jesuit missionaries were sent all over the world, including to South America. In addition to performing missionary and humanitarian work, Jesuits also served as cartographers and explorers under the auspices of the Spanish, Portuguese, and French Crowns as they went into remote areas to find and evangelize to native populations. In Encounters in the New World, Mirela Altic analyses over 150 of these maps, most of which have never previously been published. She traces the Jesuit contribution to mapping and mapmaking from their arrival in the New World into the post-suppression period and places the Jesuit contribution to cartography in the context of their worldwide undertakings in the fields of science and art. Altic reveals that the Jesuit mapping of the New World was not just a physical survey of unknown space, but was in fact the most important link that brought two cultures together and successfully enabled an exchange of ideas and cultural concepts between the Old World and the New"--

Les religions ont aujourd'hui mauvaise réputation et le catholicisme n'échappe pas à ce discrédit. Depuis les Pères de l'Église, beaucoup d'illustres auteurs se sont livrés à l'apologétique, mais comment défendre de nos jours la religion elle-même sans prendre en compte la pertinence des questions renvoyées par nos contemporains ? Est-elle essentielle à l'humanité ou appartient-elle à une phase « dépassée » de son histoire ? Permet-elle de s'ancrer dans le réel ? Nous fait-elle vraiment accéder au sens de l'existence et alimente-t-elle le goût de la vie ? Sans ignorer les arguments critiques, Paul Valadier n'hésite pas à se livrer ici à un audacieux éloge de la religion, dimension indispensable, selon lui, au déploiement de la foi. Car comment imaginer une foi totalement déconnectée du religieux, sinon au risque de tomber dans le subjectivisme, souvent source de violences et de manipulations ?

Nel 2021 Montepulciano ha onorato il suo illustre concittadino, Roberto Bellarmino, con un simposio a livello internazionale di cui si è pubblicato il risultato. Una miscellanea di saggi in cui storia di Bellarmino è affiancata dall'analisi delle sue curiose lettere e da altri numerosi testi conservati nell'Archivio diocesano ed è inoltre contestualizzata attraverso un'accurata revisione bibliografica, evidenziando la sua attività di catecheta e predicatore e la sua canonizzazione, nella cornice della cultura gesuita del Cinque-Seicento.
